Staff Supervision For Managers

"Of all the relationships we have at work, the one with our boss or supervisor has the greatest impact on our emotional and physical health"
Daniel Goleman
Working With Emotional Intelligence (1998)

Staff supervision is a highly effective tool of staff management, which can empower both supervisees and supervisors. When practised skillfully, supervision helps staff become more focused and clear about what they are doing and why, boosts motivation and job satisfaction and is the cornerstone of continuing professional development. Yet good quality supervisory practices are very patchy and little understood within the voluntary sector. This one-day workshop – which draws on the work and research of Daniel Goleman who coined the term ‘emotional intelligence’ – demonstrates why supervision is so important and explores the key skills needed for it to be effective.

Course Outline

The workshop will provide:

  • a suggested six stage supervision process
  • an outline of the key competencies required for effective supervision, including:
  • active listening
  • building empathy
  • developing trust
  • devising and working with a written work programme
  • providing constructive feedback
  • promoting personal and professional development
  • opportunities to practice key skills
  • encouragement to share experiences of good and bad practice
  • detailed course notes

Who Should Attend?
The workshop is for people responsible for the work/performance of others and who wish to become more effective in their supervisory role.
